learn to dance
Ballroom dancing is about dancing with a partner.

It’s also about dancing using steps and moves you have already learned, although the real skill is in how you put the steps together.

While many people dance fixed routines, others put their steps together spontaneously to create a fresh dance every time. In any case, it helps to be able to vary your routine a bit to navigate your way round other people on the dance floor!

You can learn some very elaborate steps in all the different ballroom dances, but for me the fun comes in dancing my few basic steps well, and adding a little variation from time to time.

Apart from the traditional ballroom dances like the Waltz, which began life in the eighteenth century (and is still going strong!), there is a whole world of Latin ballroom dances, such as the Cha Cha Cha and Jive, which derive from Latin American music and rhythms.

If you start with the Waltz and the Cha Cha, you will have the basis to learn the many other dances which follow on from them.

They are great fun as you learn and practice, and even better when you get a chance to use them “for real” at a dance.
